I believe I witnessed a threat on the life of the vice president of the United States of America on May 20 when Charlton Heston held up a gun and made a rude comment at a convention of the National Rifle Association. I believe in the First Amendment right of free speech, but there are lines drawn. You may not shout fire in a crowded theater. To incite others to do violence against the vice president, which is what I believe I witnessed on television news broadcasts crosses the line.

The NRA has gone too far in its threats and intimidation of the people of America. Its failure to support reasonable legislation, its rejection of the Million Mom March, and now a threat on the life of the vice president, shame, shame. Shame. Rev. Dr. James M. Young Orono United Methodist Church
