The Bangor Daily News’ front-page headline for June 3-4, “Job cuts highest in nine years: Stock market soars as hot economy cools,” means our economic system is broke and needs fixing. We need an economy that’s good for everybody.
Instead, we have an economic system where the top priority is profit and things like enough jobs and adequate pay for workers, safe working conditions and maintaining a healthy environment are not as important. No wonder the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It is a system that will eventually destroy us all.
An economy that listens to Wall Street and caters to its stockholders instead of listening to Main Street and its workers and consumers is an economy that isn’t working and needs to be recreated. Larry Dansinger Monroe
