BREWER – Seniors Jen Parlin and Jamie Wacome are pals off the field and a potent combination on the field for the Messalonskee softball team this year.

The pitcher and catcher, respectively, came through again for the Eagles of Oakland in Tuesday’s Eastern Maine Class A championship game against Brewer at Coffin Field.

Parlin allowed one run, scattering six hits and striking out five, while Wacome singled twice and scored two runs as No. 2 Messalonskee upended No. 1 Brewer 6-1.

Messalonskee, which has won the regional title four of last five years, will face Western Maine champion Portland (19-0) for the state title Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.

Brewer wraps up its season at 16-2.

Messalonskee put on a display of hitting, pitching and fielding. The Eagles pounded out 10 hits and had one error that turned out to be harmless.

With Wacome’s help in calling the game, Parlin kept the ball on the ground. With shortstop Bonnie Smith keying the defense, Messalonskee racked up 13 groundouts.

“I’ve always had to sit in the dugout as the backup pitcher and I actually get to go out and do it myself,” said Jen Parlin, coach Terry Parlin’s daughter.

Terry Parlin also gave Jen and Jamie leeway in what they wanted to throw.

“They work together a lot, so I just have Jen throw to Jamie and let them make them decisions, and they’ll be fine,” he said.

The Messalonskee offense exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. Wacome, Holly Morin and Amy McMullin hit consecutive singles, and Morin’s hit to deep center field scored Wacome. Morin scored on a Stephanie Bouchard sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.

McMullin scored on a single by Lauren Haag to give Messlonskee a 4-1 advantage.

“[Brewer] took the bunt away from us, and those kids who had been bunting actually hit the ball very hard and came through for us,” Terry Parlin said.

Haag and Erin Findlan kept the inning alive with a single each, and that’s where the Eagles showed off their baserunning skills. With Haag on third and Findlan on first they successfully executed a delayed double steal, and a throwing error during the steal attempt allowed Findlan to reach third. She scored on another error for a 6-1 lead.

“We had that one inning that got us down and all year we hadn’t had that,” said Brewer senior Allison Wing, who had an RBI single. “It came back and got us… We weren’t making the plays, which is key to getting out of the inning.”

The Witches played perfect defense after the fourth-inning letdown. They didn’t allow a baserunner until Bonnie Smith’s two-out single in the seventh.

Brewer pitcher Tami Corey, who closed the season at 15-2, induced eight groundouts in the final three innings. She had no strikeouts and no walks in the game.

Corey also scored the Witches’ only run when she doubled into right field in the third inning and scored on a single by Wing to tie the game. Messalonskee notched its first run when Wacome singled in the second and Morin drove her in on a double. Brewer ended the top of the second with a double play.
