Wood steals the show as PVC stars shine

BREWER – George Stevens of Blue Hill standout Jamie Wood got a big round of applause when she cranked four straight home runs during Thursday’s Penobscot Valley Conference softball All-Star Night derby.

But Wood didn’t need a home run to make an impression during the All-Star game at Coffin Field. Wood’s RBI groundout to first base gave the visiting team a 1-0 lead that held up until the sixth inning, when Bangor’s Megan Huckins of the home team drove in Justine Ferland of Old Town.

The all-star game ended in a 1-1 tie – a fitting finish for a game that matched up the best of the PVC, regardless of class and year.

Brewer’s Kelly Cookson and Mattanawcook of Lincoln’s Dean Libbey coached the home team. Mike Carrier of Bucksport and Caribou’s Sue White skippered the visitors.

The evening started with the home run derby, the first event in a skills competition that also featured baserunning and throwing accuracy competitions.

The players were given 10 attempts to hit the ball past orange cones set up 185 feet away, in Coffin’s deep outfield. Three players were tied at one homer apiece until Wood hit her four to win the contest.

She stepped up to the plate in the second inning of the game with the bases loaded, worked the count full and fouled off four pitches until her groundout.

“I guess I was talking too much trash to the pitcher,” joked Wood, who is a summer softball pal of Mattanawcook hurler Kari Vance. “I got caught up in that and I hit a bad ball.”

Wood’s groundout plated Jody Merchant of Ellsworth, who had singled, advanced on a single by Bucksport’s Kelly White and got to third on an error.

Wood said she especially liked playing on the same team with the Bucksport all-stars. The Eagles and Golden Bucks were rivals in Class B until GSA moved down to Class C this year.

“It’s always great to play the Bucksport girls. It’s a great rivalry,” she said. “It was just fun to play with all your friends.”

The game turned into a pitching duel – one that involved eight pitchers.

Vance, Bangor’s Jen Jimmo, GSA’s Brooke Keniston and Jamie Wells of Hampden combined to give up three hits, strike out five and walk three. The run, charged to Vance, was unearned.

For the visiting team, Kelly White of Bucksport, Stearns of Millinocket’s Shannon Sirois, White’s teammate Annette Caswell and Sumner of East Sullivan’s Jill Osier scattered four hits, fanned eight and walked three. Caswell had three of those strikeouts.

Wing won the base running competition when she cruised around the bases in 11.88 seconds. Wing’s teammate Jenny Higgins took the throwing accuracy contest, in which players threw a ball from home to a cone set up past second base.

Turner Sporting Goods of Bangor sponsored the All-Star Night.
