I don’t usually write anything to the newspaper, but I must caution drivers to remember that our children are out of school and on the streets with their bicycles. One of the biggest responsibilities as a parent is to keep our children safe. My second-grade son and I were riding our bikes on Fourteenth Street when the driver of a car coming in the opposite direction chose to take a left-hand turn onto a side street without putting on a blinker or stopping for my son who was three feet in front of me on his bike.
If the driver of that vehicle had been going any faster (as most are on our street), my son would have been badly injured. According to Maine law (29-A MRSA 2053), my son and I had the right of way (the same as if we had been in a car). I am teaching my son the rules of the road, but I think some drivers of vehicles need to review their driver education books and slow down on our streets and watch for bicyclists and pedestrians.
