The Department of Conservation has ignored the recommendations of its staff and a substantial percent of Mainers and has applied to the Land Use Regulation Commission for permission to develop the John’s Bridge area of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Development will increase motorized water craft traffic on extensive portions of the waterway effectively destroying the quiet, near wilderness character of the Allagash.

The DOC and those who want to develop the John’s Bridge area are like a 2-year-old at bedtime using every whine, tantrum, subterfuge, and false promise to stay up. Why does a 2-year-old want to stay up: to participate in quiet conversation; to read; to pursue a hobby; to wind down at the end of the day? No. The answer is power. Because bedtime was someone else’s decision is reason enough to fight it.

It seems strange that the DOC complies with the demands of those few people who wish to destroy the character of the AWW and not to those who wish to preserve the original intent of the mandate. DOC needs to explain, again, its position and reasons to a concerned public. Janet Alexander Old Town
