The 44th New England Women’s Golf Association Championship and the Barbara and Bud Leavitt Memorial Golf Classic are among the high-profile Maine events scheduled this month.
The Sugarloaf Golf Club in Carrabassett Valley, named one of the top 20 playable courses in America by Golf Digest Woman magazine, is the site of the NEWGA Championship, which is scheduled July 11-13.
Abby Spector of Waterville, who plays at the University of North Carolina, is among the 14 Maine competitors at the event. Past champions include Jane Blalock, Pat Bradley and Joanne “Big Momma” Carner, all of whom won numerous events on the LPGA Tour.
The initial field of 117 competitors will be trimmed down to 70 for the final day.
On July 31, golfers will gather at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono for the 9th Leavitt Memorial Golf Classic.
The tournament is dedicated to the memory of former NEWS outdoor columnist and executive sports editor Bud Leavitt and his wife Barbara.
The Leavitt Memorial Classic is expected to raise more than $20,000 for the Jimmy Fund, a major fundraising arm of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The Jimmy Fund has conducted more than 130 golf tournaments in 18 years and has earned more than $23 million for cancer research and care of cancer patients.
The Leavitt Memorial Classic is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start, with registration set at 9:30 a.m. Contact Robin Climo at 945-9979.
