Maine hockey coach Shawn Walsh arrived in Los Angeles on Monday as he prepared to continue his cancer treatment at the UCLA Medical Center.

Walsh underwent surgery earlier this month in Boston for the removal of a cancerous kidney. The next step will be immunotherapy to try to eradicate cancer found in lymph nodes under his breastplate.

Walsh planned to undergo preliminary testing at the UCLA Medical Center, the University of Maine said in a statement.

“I feel very good and my recovery is on pace. I am looking forward to meeting with the doctors at UCLA to finalize our decision on the treatment protocol we decide to undertake,” he said in a statement.

Walsh, 45 has been at UMaine since 1984. The Black Bears won national championships in 1993 and 1999 and made five additional trips to the Frozen Four under his leadership.
