Zone 3 clubs nip Bangor, Twins> Stacy shot stuns Comrades, Stacy

AUGUSTA – When Greg Stacy came to the plate in the top of the 10th inning in Oxford Hills’ state American Legion tournament, his goals were simple and unspectacular.

“It’s been awhile since I’d hit the ball hard, so I was just trying to come through with a base hit and keep the inning going,” Stacy said.

He did more than that.

Stacy turned on a Travis Brooker offering and lofted a two-run homer that gave the Vikings a 10-8 victory over the Bangor Comrades. Not that he knew it at the time.

“I thought it was a blooper. I didn’t get all of it,” Stacy said. “I thought I got under it. I was mad. But it carried.”

In other Saturday action involving a Zone 1 team, the Orono Twins got a sterling pitching performance from Jason Robbins (nine hits, one earned run), but never quite solved New Auburn’s Brian Lambert, who struck out 11 en route to a 2-1 victory.

In the Bangor-Oxford Hills game, the Oxford Hills hitters pounded out 21 hits against Bangor pitching before winning the game in extra innings.

Five Oxford Hills hitters – including three of the first five hitters – collected three base hits to lead the barrage.

Oxford Hills took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth, but Bangor answered in the seventh when Jeremy Karam smacked a two-run homer to right-center. Karam had three hits and five RBIs in the game.

The Vikes retook the lead with two more runs in the eighth before Karam forced extra innings with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Oxford Hills coach Steve Jones said the Vikings were trying to work around Karam, but he hit a ball that was out of the strike zone.

“He was not supposed to hit,” Jones said. “That was set in stone.”

In the New Auburn-Orono game, the Twins had plenty of opportunities despite Lambert’s six-hitter.

But 10 runners left on base and a couple of mistakes proved costly.

Twice the Twins had runners erased after reaching third base: once on a fourth-inning rundown and once on a sixth-inning, no-out grounder to short.

“We made too many mistakes,” Orono coach Brian Harvey said. “We didn’t capitalize on baserunners in scoring position like we have all year.”

Meanwhile, Lambert was proving tough to solve. The 6-foot-8 righty mixed a lively fastball with a biting slider and nasty splitter and kept the Twins off-balance.

But Lambert said he didn’t have his best stuff.

“I went out there and struggled with my fastball a little bit so I had to rely on my off-speed stuff a little more than I thought I’d have to,” he said.

Even when things went bad for Lambert, they went good.

Aaron Civiello scored the lone run for Orono when he reached on a wild pitch while striking out to lead off the eighth. He stole second and scored on Brad Wheaton’s single.

Then Lambert closed the door by striking out Ben Clark – his fourth strikeout of the inning.
