AUGUSTA – Jared Cushman’s bases-loaded, sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th plated the winning run as Zone 2 champ Augusta remained unbeaten in the American Legion state baseball tournament with a 5-4 win over Andrews Post of Portland Monday afternoon.
Bob Castonguay led off the 11th with a walk before Caleb McKenzie singled him to second. After a flyout, Sam Thomas relieved Simon Williams and intentionally walked Lance Brunelle (two doubles) to set up Cushman’s sac fly.
In the 10th, Andrews had runners at second and third before reliever Mike Caggiano intentionally walked Luc Walker to load the bases. With the first and third basemen stationed 10 feet away from home plate to guard against a wild pitch, Caggiano gloved a comebacker to the mound and completed an inning-ending, 1-2-3 double play.
Sean Brawn hit an RBI single and Scott Brawn followed with an RBI triple in the first. Scott Brawn then scored on a wild pitch.
For Andrews, Simon Williams went 4-for-4 with a solo homer, a triple, and two singles. Tony Humenick had two singles and an RBI while Walker hit an RBI double.
Andrew will meet Nova Seafood in a 3 p.m. elimination game Tuesday while Augusta will take on Waterville at 4 p.m.
