AUGUSTA – The curse continues.
Despite winning its first three tourney games, playing on its home field, and saving its ace pitcher for Wednesday’s title game, Augusta Post 205 is still looking for its first American Legion state crown.
The 2000 champion is Andrews Post of Portland, which knocked off Augusta 14-9 Wednesday afternoon at McGuire Field. Andrews will represent Maine at the East regionals in West Warwick, R.I., starting Wednesday.
A five-run seventh gave Andrews a lead it wouldn’t relinquish (13-8). Ryan Marsh led off with a double, Sam Thomas singled, and Marsh scored on an error. Two walks scored another run before Luc Walker (two doubles, single, six RBIs) drilled a one-out double to score the next three.
Starter Mike Duperre allowed seven hits in eight innings.
For Augusta, Scott Brawn hit a three-run homer in the fifth and a solo shot in the ninth. Brandon Royce hit a solo homer in the fourth and doubled for two RBIs. Lance Brunelle added an RBI double.
The all-tournament team was headed by MVP Simon Williams (15-for-26, four homers) and includes the following: Infielders: Jeremy Karam of Bangor, Brooks Paradis of Waterville, Derek McIntosh of New Auburn, Scott Shirrell of Nova Seafood, Augusta’s Jared Cushman and Scott Brawn, and Andrews’ Andy Koocher; Outfielders: Eric Cavers of Oxford Hills, Andrews’ Williams and Travis Anthoine, and Waterville’s Kris Vigue; Pitchers: New Auburn’s Bryan Lambert, Andrews’ Thomas and Duperre, and Augusta’s Royce.
Augusta won the sportsmanship award.
