After being involved as a coach, league official, or organizer in the sport of soccer for the last 32 years, Louis Janicki of Hampden finds himself with more free time than he wants this fall.

Janicki, who coached the John Bapst Memorial High School boys varsity soccer team the last three seasons and the Nokomis of Newport boys varsity team the two years prior to that, is not back with the Crusaders this year.

The 49-year-old owner of H.O. Bouchard Arena in Brewer was reluctant to discuss specifics regarding his departure from the Bangor private school.

“I can say this. They fired me,” Janicki said. “They instituted contracts this year for the first time. I did have a contract for this [2000] season.”

Janicki wouldn’t say whether he’ll be taking any action against John Bapst.

“It’s valid to say that I have an attourney at this stage, but other than that, I have no comment at this time,” said Janicki. “We’re preparing to make a statement at the end of the week and it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to comment right now.”

John Bapst principal Joe Sekera was also reluctant to comment about any possible action by Janicki, and admitted only that Sekera was not coaching this fall.

“To my knowledge, there is nothing that’s pending and if there was, I would not have any comment on it because it’s private matter to school officials and all parties involved as a matter of school policy,” Sekera said.

Former athletic director Bob Cimbollek, who resigned his job along with that of the school’s varsity boys basketball coach last month after 40 years on the jobs, wouldn’t say if Janicki’s departure had anything to do with his decision.

“I’m not going to comment on it,” Cimbollek said. “If things go to court, than I’ll comment on it if I’m called as a witness or whatever, but I’m not going to get involved in any mudslinging right now.”

Janicki said he’s consulting with “several attourneys” and that he anticipates having a press conference at the end of the week.

The Crusaders had a 20-22-2 record under Janicki. Last year, Bapst went 8-8 and advanced to the Eastern Maine Class B semifinals before losing 2-1 to No. 6 Camden-Rockport. Janicki’s Nokomis teams went 7-19-2 in two seasons.
