AUGUSTA – The Internal Revenue Service has a new toll-free help line for questions related to the appeals process, an independent review of IRS case findings. The number is (877) 457-5055.

Previously, each of the 33 appeals offices nationwide used a local number that was not toll free. Now, the system will automatically direct callers from Maine to the Boston Appeals Office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Taxpayers may call for help in preparing their appeal of an IRS collection or examination matter. They also may use this service after their tax matter has been transferred to appeals.

For more information about the appeals operation, visit the updated appeals section of the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov/prod/indinfo/appeals.
