Police seek suspect in marijuana find

BELFAST – Waldo County sheriff’s detectives were looking for a Burnham man Tuesday who they believe had been growing and selling marijuana.

On Monday, Detectives Jason Trundy and Greg Stearns seized what they believe is more than 20 pounds of marijuana from the Mount Road mobile home Michael Huff, 28, shares with a girlfriend. The Sheriff’s Department received a tip that Huff had recently harvested a crop of marijuana.

About noon Monday, the detectives knocked on the door. When Huff’s girlfriend opened it, the detectives said, they smelled a strong odor of curing marijuana.

Trundy went to Belfast to request a search warrant, while Stearns stayed at the house. Trundy returned with a warrant about 2 p.m., and the detectives searched the home.

The detectives said the couple had apparently moved out of the trailer’s master bedroom so it could be used to dry what appeared to be freshly cut marijuana plants. The walls of the bedroom were lined with hanging branches and plants that the detectives said were probably harvested within the past week.

The detectives seized the marijuana, along with a scale, drug paraphernalia, eight guns and a price list. Trundy said the marijuana was listed for sale at $225 per ounce, and $12.50 per gram.

Huff was still being sought Tuesday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Department expects to charge him with Class B trafficking, a crime that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The detectives said the District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to charge Huff’s girlfriend.
