ROCKLAND – The exhibition “On Island: A Century of Continuity and Change” at the Farnsworth Art Museum will close Saturday, Oct. 15. The show, conceived by the museum in close cooperation with the Island Institute, surveys a hundred years of painting on Maine islands, from the beginning of the century until today. The show includes over 85 works by 49 artists with images from 14 islands off the coast of Maine.

Among the artists represented in the show are Childe Hassam, John Singer Sargent, Willard Metcalf, Frank Benson, Robert Henri, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Marsden Hartley, N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Raphael Soyer, Fairfield Porter, William Kienbusch, Eric Hopkins and William Manning.

Suzette Lane McAvoy, curator of contemporary art at the Farnsworth, selected the exhibition of island-related art. With just a few days left to view the inaugural exhibit of the museum’s new Jamien Morehouse Wing, the Farnsworth encourages residents and visitors alike to come by and see this significant exhibit one last time.
