BURNHAM – A local man who fell from a hunter’s tree stand Saturday was in critical condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Sunday evening.

Micah Thurston of the Maine Warden Service said Larry Hubbard, believed to be about 40, of Burnham was apparently in a tree stand near his driveway at about 7 p.m. Saturday when he fell about 12 feet to the ground.

Thurston said he did not know why Hubbard was in the tree stand after dark, when hunting is no longer permitted. “That’s what I’d like to know,” he said.

Thurston said the matter was under investigation. Due to the severity of Hubbard’s injuries, Thurston has been unable to interview him.

A family member heard Hubbard yelling after the fall, Thurston said, and came to his aid.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department was called, and a deputy arrived on the scene at about 7:20 p.m. The matter later was turned over to Thurston.

The Unity Ambulance Service wanted to take Hubbard to EMMC by helicopter but could not get the aircraft, Thurston said. Hubbard was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

“He couldn’t move,” Thurston said of Hubbard’s condition when he was found at the bottom of the tree stand.
