WATERVILLE – Pat Conley passed for 250 yards and a touchdown while Danny Noyes caught nine passes for 141 yards and ran for 80 yards on 13 carries Saturday to lead Colby College to a 34-7 football victory over instate rival Bowdoin College of Brunswick at Seaverns Field.

Coach Tom Austin’s White Mules finished the season 7-1, earning a share of the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship while claiming their 10th outright crown in the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series.

Colby finished in a three-way tie for the NESCAC title with Amherst and Middlebury. The Mules suffered their lone defeat to the Lord Jeffs, but were the only team to beat the Panthers.

Conley, a sophomore from Bath, set a league single-season record with 1,996 passing yards. Noyes, a junior from Silver Lake, N.H., established a NESCAC season record with 872 receiving yards.

Colby snapped a 7-7 deadlock while scoring 10 points in the second quarter. Rashad Randolph put the Mules ahead for good, capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 22-yard scoring run.

Keith Jonassen kicked a 22-yard field goal in the final minute of the half to make it 17-7 and added a 37-yarder in the third.

Bowdoin managed only 119 total yards against a Colby defense paced by Drew Johnson (7 tackles).

Hamilton 17, Bates 2

At Lewiston, Chris Weeden rushed for a career-high 169 yards and one touchdown as Hamilton College beat Bates in the season finale for both teams.

Dan Scanlon put Hamilton on the board with a blocked punt recovered by Gavin Fitts in the end zone.

Bates responded in the second with a punt block by Owen Miehe that Hamilton fell on the end zone for safety, making the score 7-2. Greg Bemis added a 40-yard field goal for Hamilton.

Weeden scored the Continentals’ first offensive touchdown of the season with 3:09 left in the half.

Mules qualify for nationals

At Dartmouth, Mass., Maria Mensching’s fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Saturday helped Colby College of Waterville finish fourth overall with 161 points and earn a berth in the 2000 NCAA championships.

Middlebury held off Williams 60-61 to win the women’s meet and Amherst was third.

On the men’s side, the Mules’ Nat Brown had a 23rd-place finish, good for a berth at the national meet, which will be run Saturday in Spokane, Wash. The top four women’s teams and top five men’s teams from the regionals qualified for nationals.

Mensching finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 17 minutes, 44.40 seconds. Mary Phelps was the second Colby runner to finish, placing 17th with an 18:31.05. Tiffany Frazar (33rd), Katie Macdonald (50th) and Megan Hoar (57th) rounded out the Mules’ top five.

Brown’s time on the 8,000-meter course was 25:40.89. The Colby men’s team scored 424 points and came in 16th out of 32 squads. Keene State (N.H.) won the men’s meet with 38 points.

Volleyball

Black Bears split weekend

At Philadelphia, Leah Voss racked up 17 kills, one ace and 23 digs to lead the University of Maine volleyball team past Drexel 15-9, 15-12, 15-10 Sunday.

On Saturday in Towson, Md., Towson won the first two games but needed a fourth to take the match against the Black Bears Saturday, winning with scores of 15-4, 15-5, 14-16, 15-11.

In Sunday’s match, Dawn Dummermuth added 13 kills and six digs. Cheryl Elliott had five aces and four digs for Maine, now 12-17.

In Saturday’s match, Lindsey Rattet and Melanie Madden each tallied 13 kills for 14-17 Towson. Jordann Tomasek had 11 kills and 13 digs.

Voss paced the Bears with 14 kills and 15 digs. Claire Poliquin notched 11 kills, and Adrienne Poplawski had 10 kills, nine digs and four blocks.

Men’s soccer

Tufts 3, Bowdoin 1

At Brunswick, Garrett Dale scored two goals for the Jumbos and Steve McDermid made seven saves on 12 shots as Tufts won the ECAC New England Division III championship.

Pat Brophy added a goal for the 11-5-2 Jumbos, the first of three Tufts scores in the first half.

Ethan Roth scored an unassisted goal for the 14-2-2 Polar Bears in the second half. Travis Derr made two saves on 10 shots.
