Electoral College items land couple on ‘Today’

BANGOR – The Glenburn couple who created a line of Electoral College merchandise will appear on “Today” this morning.

Recent heated discussions about the importance and relevance of the Electoral College as a method to choose the president has sparked national interest in the selection process and has brought the curious to the Internet, said John Diamond, who with his wife, Marcia, conceptualized the products.

Those Web surfers are stumbling across the Diamonds’ site, and sales have increased substantially every day since the presidential election went undecided a week ago.

“It’s been multiplying over and over and over,” said Donna Wing, one of the two people the Diamonds hired to help process orders. “It’s like tenfold, then tenfold of that, then tenfold of that.”

“I’ve had a hard time getting through to home because the two people working there are constantly on the phone,” John Diamond said.

Four years ago, the words Electoral College were incorporated into a design that looks like other shirts promoting institutions of higher education, John Diamond said. Initially the intent was to capture the interest of political junkies, those who would look at the shirt and say, “I get it,” he said. Others, however, see the shirt and ask, “Is that a real school?”

Not anymore. “Today” producers were told of the merchandise and asked the Diamonds to talk about the products on the program. Initially they were scheduled to appear Wednesday, but later Monday the show schedulers told the Diamonds they needed to be in New York and ready to go on the air this morning.

John Diamond, director of public affairs at the University of Maine, was being flown by the show to New York from San Antonio, Texas, where he was attending a meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. Marcia Diamond, who is a schoolteacher and assistant principal at All Saints Catholic School, was to leave Monday evening from Bangor.

What time the Diamonds will appear on national television is not known. “Today” now runs three hours, from 7 to 10 a.m.

Since last Tuesday, the Diamonds haven’t had a chance to catch their breath, John Diamond said, but they are not complaining.

“It’s a nice problem to have,” he said. “It’s going to be big after [today].”
