Bipartisan agreement

Should the election crisis continue getting worse, I suggest the following resolution: Al Gore and George Bush would agree to creatively use the Constitution to allow another person to be elected president. The procedure is complicated, but it could be done.

The person chosen would be either a moderate Republican or a rather conservative Democrat; names that come to mind include Colin Powell, Bill Cohen and Jimmy Carter.

If the two nominees could reach such an agreement, the following results probably would ensue: Whoever became president would have greater legitimacy than either Gore or Bush will have given the increasingly bitter and close nature of this election; the new president probably would pursue policies that would be acceptable to a majority of persons in the nation; both Gore and Bush would serve as examples of making true sacrifice for the good of the nation.

Both Gore and Bush are young enough to run again in four or eight years. Of course, my suggestion is radical and unprecedented. But if used it would be better for the nation than having a president who ends up being chosen by a few hundred disputed votes in a handful of states. Alan Ginsberg Corea
