BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

In the Nov. 11-12 edition of the Bangor Daily New, in a letter to the editor, Sandra Pasternack writes about her disappointment in the defeat of Question 6 and relates a tale where she blames discrimination for her being fired in 1998.

While I do not wish any ill upon Ms. Pasternack, I would like to point out to her that, in my view, she was not fired for her sexual orientation, but for her lack of discretion. She told her boss that she was coming out of the closet and would go to each of her clients and announce her orientation, offering to hand over the account to another rep if her client was uncomfortable. After this announcement to her boss, she was fired.

Ms. Pasternack’s orientation was neither her boss’ nor her clients’ business. She should have felt free to come out to her family and friends, but this discussion had no place in the business environment. Neither would a discussion of her politics or religion. Unlike age, sex and race, sexual orientation would never have been an issue except that she brought it up. Leo Todd Old Town
