SIDNEY – A Winthrop man was killed when his car rolled over after striking a moose on Interstate 95 Tuesday night, state police said.

A second car also struck the animal after the first collision, and the driver was injured, state Trooper Nicholas Grass said Wednesday. The collisions forced police to close the northbound lane of I-95, backing up traffic to Augusta before the highway was reopened.

Police said Walter Curtis Jr. was driving the first car, which struck the moose shortly before 9 p.m. Curtis’ car went into a ditch at the side of the highway and rolled over, and Curtis died at the scene. A passenger, Anthony Smith, 26, of Readfield, was being treated at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville and the other passenger, Vincent Reed, 35, of Kents Hill, was released.
