SEARSMONT – An 83-year-old local man was recuperating Thursday from injuries suffered when he was run over by a sport utility vehicle while hauling a load of manure with his tractor, authorities said.

Fred Cross, 83, of the Belfast-Union Road was hospitalized at Waldo County General Hospital as a result of the Tuesday morning accident.

Waldo County Deputy Sheriff Ben Seekins said Cross received extensive bumps and bruises from the collision but was not seriously injured.

“He spent a couple nights in the hospital, but he’s doing OK,” Seekins said Thursday.

Cross was hauling a wagon load of manure from a farm down the road from his place when he was hit by a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Christine M. James, 38, of Searsmont.

The accident occurred on a crest in the road at 9:25 a.m. Seekins said James crested the hill and encountered Cross’ tractor and wagon. James applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time. Her vehicle rode over the wagon and 1996 Ingersoll tractor before coming to rest.

Seekins reconstructed the scene and the accident remains under investigation.
