CHARLOTTE – Three people riding in what may be a stolen vehicle were injured Saturday morning when the car went off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames.

Patrick Newell, 32, of Princeton, Andrea Hall, 22, of Perry and Bernard Dana, 30, of Pleasant Point were pulled from the burning car by a passer-by, Trooper Paul White of the Maine State Police said Saturday.

White said the fire destroyed the 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon. He said that shortly after the accident, the Pleasant Point Police Department reported a station wagon had been stolen from the reservation. A check of the vehicle identification number led to the conclusion that the station wagon involved in the accident is the same one stolen from Pleasant Point, White said Sunday.

The trooper said that around 11:20 a.m. Saturday, he received a report that there had been an accident on the Station Road, about 2.5 miles east of the Charlotte Road.

White said Calais Fire and Rescue were the first crews on the scene, and they were able to extinguish the fire. The trooper said he believes Hall may have been the driver of the vehicle. He said he did not know why the vehicle went off the road, but he believes alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

All three of the car’s occupants were taken to Calais Regional Hospital. A hospital official said late Saturday that Newell, suffering from cuts, bruises and a possible broken nose, was admitted to the hospital and was listed in stable condition. His condition was unchanged Sunday. Hall, who suffered cuts and bruises, was treated and later released.

Dana suffered a head injury and was taken by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Hospital officials reported Sunday that he had been discharged.

The accident remains under investigation.
