BREWER – The City Council and the school committee are scheduled to handle some of their annual business Tuesday during a joint organizational meeting at the Brewer Auditorium’s Senior Citizens Room.

According to the agenda, the event will begin at 6 p.m. with an invocation by the Rev. George Curtis III, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer and chaplain for the Brewer Fire Department.

The invocation will be followed by the swearing-in of Michael Celli and Larry Doughty, councilors-elect, re-elected School Committee Members B. Calvin Bubar III and Ruth-Marie Spellman and newly elected High School District Trustee Frank Breau.

City councilors then will elect a mayor and vice chairman from among their ranks, while school officials meet elsewhere to choose a chairman and vice chairman.

After presentations by the mayor and the mayor’s annual address, committees will be established, and councilors will establish a time and place for their regular meetings and adopt the tenets, “Ethical Principles for Excellence in Government” and “10 Habits of Highly Effective City Councils.”

Regular meetings, according to the council orders to that end, will be held at City Hall, while monthly meetings will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. The exceptions are for November, when the monthly meeting will be held on Nov. 28; August, when the meeting will be held on Aug. 21; and September, when the council will meet on Sept. 28.
