OLD ORCHARD BEACH – A worker who had been lying down on the pavement with his head in a manhole was killed when he was run over by another worker who didn’t realize there was someone in front of the truck.

Marc Guerin, 52, an employee of North American Environmental Services, died after the incident late Wednesday morning, according to Old Orchard Beach Police Detective David Hemingway.

Guerin reportedly had started doing some electrical work in a manhole on the property of Blow Bros. septic service. He was lying down in front of a truck that was parked with its engine idling.

The driver, who was not identified, ran over Guerin as he drove forward on his way out of the lot.

“We are still investigating the driver, but I don’t expect any charges from it,” Hemingway said.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating the accident, which police have characterized as an industrial accident rather than a traffic accident. OSHA officials were not available for comment.
