AUGUSTA – Maine game wardens Monday released the name of the man they believe shot a fellow deer hunter in Maine’s second fatality of the season.
Jason Stoddard, 24, of Sidney was shot while hunting Saturday near the Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center. On Monday, the Maine Warden Service identified the shooter as Matt Trow, 19, of Augusta.
Wardens believe a group of hunters was “driving” the deer, or herding them toward other members of the party, when Stoddard was shot.
Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service said three of the four hunters fired at the same time, so wardens had to determine which one actually fired the fatal hot.
Dorion said the state Attorney General’s Office must determine whether charges will be brought.
