WELLS – The passenger rail service scheduled to begin in April between Boston and Portland will look beyond the commuter market for the biggest share of its ridership.
“There will be some trains that run at commuter times, but it’s not designed to be a commuter service,” said Nathan Moulton, deputy director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority.
“We’re looking at tourists, day [trippers] who have business in Boston and travelers. Right now that is the biggest percentage of our ridership,” he said Monday night at an informational meeting that drew only two residents.
Non-commuters are expected to account for 70 percent of the ridership on the eight trains that will run each day between Boston’s North Station and St. John Street in Portland, Moulton said.
