Deception is the result of anyone who doesn’t have a sure standard of truth. This is the case with the “Anti-gay group protests school policy” story by J.M. Hirsch on the New England page of the Nov. 21 edition of the Bangor Daily News.
A euphemism is a better word for an offensive subject. Judy Quinn used three euphemisms (inclusion, diversity, hallmarks) for the subject of homosexuality. By doing so, she sanctions the fact that this is an offensive subject. It is indeed “regrettable” for the entity being held accountable for its policy on the dormitory parents on the property of the Philips Exeter Academy (the entity).
In the interest of truth, I have three observations and corrections to make with respect to the statements the Rev. Daniel Weaver made in this story. All three statements are presented as reality or truth when in fact they are not.
The Baptist Church group’s objections were said to be “denigrating our neighbors.” Two elements must be present to actually denigrate someone or something: falsehood and malicious intent. Neither element was present in the statements by Sam Phelps-Roper. He spoke only what is true because he was giving out God’s infallible Word – the Truth.
The second correction is that Sam’s objections are his personal views. Nope, not here – same reason as the first one above. He was acting as God’s mouthpiece.
This argument of homosexuality and its place in society is not with society primarily – it is with God, the law giver. Please read Leviticus 20.
The third correction: The principle first – the object of hate determines the character or quality of hate. Weaver states that “promotion of hatred is anathema” and this is “not in the spirit of the words of Jesus, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” Warning homosexuals and lesbians of the grave moral danger they are in as a result of violating his explicit commands to be holy and refraining from this sexual behavior is a high-quality love from God which the world knows nothing about. The great danger is twofold: ignorance of God’s laws and rejecting them once they are known.
I hate poison, coral snakes, black widow spiders and the AIDS virus because of the potential hazards they are to me. Does that make me hateful or evil? Elmer Morin Limestone
