BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

At this time every year, I always have one thing that doesn’t change to be thankful for. This is the best country to live in. Things aren’t perfect, but our system was designed to be changeable. Maine is the best place in the nation to live.

We don’t have a good Samaritan law, because when we see someone who needs help, we help (even if the person is a tourist). In other states, they don’t know their neighbors and won’t be involved.

We are the government of the people, for the people, by the people. John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

If you want better, be involved. Your family, marriage, child, place of business, school … your government. I am thankful for the freedom of speech. Our electors need to hear from us. We hire them, but don’t let them know what to do. They are trying with polls and surveys, but also have e-mail, toll-free numbers and you can write. Robert C. Hughes Howland
