Biron powers Maine past Mercyhurst 4-1

ERIE, Pa. – The University of Maine Black Bears reeled off four straight third-period goals en route to a 4-1 women’s ice hockey win over the Mercyhurst College Lakers Saturday. Cindy Biron scored once and assisted on two other goals for the 5-5-0 Black Bears.

ERIE, Pa. – The University of Maine Black Bears reeled off four straight third-period goals en route to a 4-1 women’s ice hockey win over the Mercyhurst College Lakers Saturday.

Cindy Biron scored once and assisted on two other goals for the 5-5-0 Black Bears. Raffi Wolf added a goal and an assist while Kely Nelson tallied a goal and Jarin Sjogren notched an assist. Dawn Froats made 19 saves to earn the win.

Jennifer Jeffrey scored a goal for the 3-7-2 Lakers. Tiffany Ribble made 25 saves.

Men’s basketball

Mass Bay CC 73, EM Tech 60

At Bangor, Tyson Tyler scored 23 points Sunday to pace unbeaten Massachusetts Bay Community College to victory over Eastern Maine Technical College at Johnston Gym.

Keith Labranch and Mike Koziol tossed in 13 points each and Paul Kampersal netted 11 for the Buccaneers.

Jeff Kimball led the Golden Eagles with 19 points. Nick Wiberg contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Andrew Borden added 13 points and eight rebounds for EM Tech.

Auburn 80, Providence 69

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mack McGadney scored five of his 12 points during a decisive 42-second span as Auburn beat Providence 80-69 for third place in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament Sunday.

Auburn (4-2) shot 46 percent from the field and had three other players in double figures. Scott Pohlman had 19 points, Marquis Daniels had 17 points and Lincoln Glass had 15.

Providence led 38-35 at halftime, but that dwindled to 63-62 with six minutes left in the game.

McGadney scored on a driving shot with 5:31 remaining to expand the Tigers’ lead to 65-62. He scored on another drive 42 seconds later and hit a free throw after Marcus Douthit was called for a technical. Douthit, who had four points, fouled out on the play.

Glass connected on two shots to make it 70-62 with 4:49 left in the game.

After that, the Friars (2-3) never got closer than six points.

Providence shot 40 percent from the field and had three players in double figures with Romauld Augustin and Maris Laksa with 15 each and Erron Maxey with 14 points.

Jamison Brewer scored seven points and had 16 rebounds for the Tigers, including 13 on the defensive end.
