The program was so popular last year, the Eastern Agency on Aging is offering it again.
The AARP 55 Alive Safe Driving Program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, and Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the agency’s office boardroom, 450 Essex St., Bangor.
Carol Higgins of EAA said last year’s program “was very successful, so we felt it would be a good idea to repeat it. It’s a wonderful program that gives older people a brush-up on their driving skills.”
Sylvia Smith facilitates the eight-hour course, which helps people focus on such things as physical changes that may affect the driving ability of people ages 55 and older.
During the course, participants will review the current driving manual to refresh and update their knowledge of driving regulations. You also will be offered the opportunity to share with others the challenges of driving, and exchange ideas on how to cope with them.
There is no written or driving test, but those who complete the course will receive a two-year certificate that may enable the participant to receive discounts from several automobile insurance companies.
Course cost is $10 per person, and it is open to individuals age 50 and older.
The enrollment is limited to 25 participants, simply because that is all the boardroom will hold, Higgins said.
When we spoke with Higgins on Monday, however, plenty of spaces were still available.
She also said that “if we have an overload of peopl, we will just hold another class, at a later date, so that anyone who wants to take this course will be able to do so.”

Students serving local churches also are asking their congregations to participate, and local communities of faith are urged to make donations as well.
The public is invited to attend seminary chapel services at 11 a.m. each Wednesday, and you are especially welcome during the holiday season.
