ELLSWORTH – A Cherryfield man was injured Tuesday afternoon after he stepped into the path of a tractor-trailer on Route 1A, apparently on purpose.
According to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department, Thomas Colbeth, 44, had been walking on the busy road near the intersection of Route 180 when he ran in front of the tractor-trailer that was heading north on the road. The truck was driven by Walter Nudd, 46, of Waverly, Tenn.
Witnesses told police they saw Colbeth standing on the side of the road near the Sunrise Glass building, Page said. When he saw the truck, he ran right out in front of it, he said.
Colbeth suffered major leg injuries in the incident and was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
Nudd was not injured.
