FORT KENT – A public appeal two weeks ago for volunteers to serve on several community boards paid off for the town.

Monday night the Town Council approved the appointments of 11 people to two boards. Volunteers are still needed for alternate positions on the planning board and zoning board of appeals, and one member of the budget committee.

James Dube and Kevin Ouellette were appointed to serve three-year terms on the budget committee. The board still has vacancies for a three-year position and one alternate.

The nine-person recreation and parks advisory committee was filled.

Appointed to terms ending on Sept. 20, 2001, were James Deprey, MatthewRossignol and Pam Bard. Appointed to two-year terms were Tom Desjardins, Kermit Pooler and Nola Sirois. Appointed to three-year terms ending on Sept. 30, 2003, were Niki Levasseur, Val Rossignol and Tamara Mitchell.

The only other appointment made was Joseph Paradis to a four-month term on the board of directors of SAD 27. He replaces Leroy Martin who resigned his position in September.

Wallagrass still needs to appoint one person to serve until the next municipal elections on the SAD 27 board. Jack Norris, who has been appointed to the state board of education, resigned his position on the SAD 27 board two weeks ago.

In other business Monday night, the Town Council agreed to look into the purchase of a parcel of land on the corner of Route 161 and Village Road.

The parcel, known as the Toussaint property, would be used to reconfigure the intersection. A building on the site would be demolished.

There is a possibility of contaminated soil on the parcel, officials said. The site was used for years as a storage site for fuels and petroleum products.
