Washburn’s James “Chico” Hernandez recently placed second in the 74 kilogram (163 pounds) class at the World Cup of Sombo Wrestling held at the University of Nice in Nice, France. Hernandez won five matches before falling in the championship match to Vania Torderov of Bulgaria.

Washburn’s James “Chico” Hernandez recently placed second in the 74 kilogram (163 pounds) class at the World Cup of Sombo Wrestling held at the University of Nice in Nice, France.

Hernandez won five matches before falling in the championship match to Vania Torderov of Bulgaria. Torderov is also the European freestyle wrestling champion at that weight class and was a member of the Bulgarian Olympic team at the Sydney, Australia games.

Overall, the United States placed second in the team competition as it won two gold medals, three silver and one bronze in the eight weight classes.

Bulgaria won the team competition. France was third.
