The Bangor Daily News of Nov. 16 reported the result of a recent study of the economic, political and social status of American women. The 50 states plus the District of Columbia were divided into three groups rated high, medium and low.

In the recent – and still ongoing – presidential election, nine of the 15 states rated “high,” plus the District of Columbia went for Al Gore, as did 11 of the 18 states rated “medium,” with Florida still in the balance. All of the 17 states rated “low” voted for George W. Bush.

I don’t know that there’s a connection, but it makes for interesting speculation. Merle E. Tyrrell Houlton
