STEUBEN – A 51-year-old Steuben woman died early Tuesday when her sport utility vehicle was struck by a delivery truck on Route 1.

Trooper Elmer Farren of the Maine State Police said Linda Ciarcia died of severe head trauma. Ciarcia was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which was reported just before 5:45 a.m. the trooper said.

Farren said Ciarcia was driving a 1989 Izuzu Trooper and was entering Route 1 from the Dyer Bay Road when the accident occurred.

Ciarcia pulled out in front of a Coca-Cola delivery truck driven by 21-year-old Theodore Whitten of Palmyra, the trooper said.

Whitten was transported by Petit Manan Ambulance Service to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and later released, Farren said.

Steuben Fire and Rescue responded to the early morning report and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was on the scene.

Farren said Trooper Tim Varney is reconstructing the accident, which remains under investigation.
