HAMPDEN – The town should have a full-service supermarket by this time next year, the president of Graves’ Supermarkets Inc. said Wednesday.

The planning board recently approved the site plan for the 30,000-square-foot building on Western Avenue, and the company hopes to break ground this spring and open the store by September or October, Bob Graves said.

Planned to be the company’s flagship store, the supermarket is to include a meat counter, deli, extensive wine selection and pharmacy.

It will be the second-largest in the chain, according to Graves, who said the Presque Isle store is 40,000 square feet. Other sites are in Camden, Dover-Foxcroft, Bar Harbor and Farmington.

The development process took longer than expected due to the resignations of Town Manager Marie Baker and planner David Gould, according to Graves.

The supermarket will employ from 80 to 110 people depending on the season, he said.
