WEST FORKS PLANTATION – Bothered by high school costs, voters in this Somerset County community decided to drop out of School Administrative District 13.

Residents in the town of about 65 must pay about $24,000 per student to send their children to school.

The vote at a special town meeting Monday is the first step in a complex two-year process that would require final approval by the state Department of Education.

It could lead to the unraveling of SAD 13, a process that began in 1998 when The Forks Plantation next door pulled out.
