Man charged in fire unable to make bail

BANGOR – The man charged in connection with a burglary that resulted in a kitchen fire at a Center Street restaurant remained in Penobscot County Jail Thursday night unable to make bail.

Eric Becker, 20, appeared in 3rd District Court Thursday afternoon on charges of burglary and aggravated criminal mischief. He did not enter a plea, but Judge Ronald Russell set bail at $5,000 surety or $1,000 cash.

Police and fire responded to J. B. Parker’s restaurant at about 5 a.m. Wednesday when a tenant who lives in an upstairs apartment heard a smoke detector alarm. Police arrested Becker a short time later after he was involved in an altercation nearby on South Park Street.

The restaurant was closed Wednesday, but reopened Thursday, according to owner Brian Ross.
