BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

“Teens kill two horses” (BDN, Nov. 27) is is the saddest story I’ve read in a long time. I cannot erase it from my mind – or my heart.

All November men and women and children have taken up guns and walked into the woods in hopes of killing a large animal. What do those teens think when they see the admiration and envy showered on those who have shot and killed a moose or a deer or a bear?

What is the lesson we are giving our young? The values are all wrong. These teens should be made to pay painfully for the hurt they inflicted on the horses and their owners. Sonia Spalding Camden

.

The two teens who senselessly killed the horses need to understand the serious nature of their crime. They should be tried as adults and given the full penalty that is available by law.

Their license to hunt should be revoked for life. In lieu of prison, however, which would only serve to further reinforce their criminal tendencies they should be made to do community service, working with horses, for a sufficient amount of time for them to get to know these wonderful animals. In this way, they may be rehabilitated and possibly be-come useful citizens. Bob Brooks Freedom
