MORO – A Castle Hill man and his grandson escaped serious injury Saturday when the car in which they were riding left Route 11 and struck some trees.

Richard Watt, 63, was driving south at about 1 p.m. when he apparently blacked out, according to Maine State Police Trooper Joshua D’Angelo.

The trooper said Watt did not recall what happened before the accident.

Watt failed to negotiate a curve and his 1997 Ford Taurus went off the left side of the road, where it struck some small trees.

D’Angelo said both air bags in the car deployed, but Watt was not wearing a seat belt and his face struck the car’s windshield. He suffered a laceration to his nose.

His 3-year-old grandson, Garrett Watt, was secured in a child safety seat in the back seat of the car and was not injured.

Both were transported by the Ashland ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle where they were examined and released.

D’Angelo estimated the damage to Watt’s car at about $3,000.
