BANGOR – A Pearl Harbor memorial ceremony will be held at noon, Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Kenduskeag Stream Plaza in downtown Bangor by veterans organizations of the greater Bangor area.

The commemorative service is for the members of the U.S. Navy and Air Force who were injured or lost their lives during the Japanese surprise air attack on the U.S. Naval Shipyard at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Dec. 7, 1941.

At 7:55 a.m., the first of two waves of Japanese bombers flew over the island of Oahu, with the main target being the ships and planes based at Pearl Harbor.

Of the 96 warships in the harbor, 18 major ships were sunk or damaged, including the USS Oklahoma, which was overturned, and the USS Arizona, which was sunk with 1,177 hands onboard.

The dead included 2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians, with 1,178 wounded.

A memorial to the USS Arizona spans the site at Pearl Harbor where the ship went down.

For more information, contact Paul S. Colburn, Pearl Harbor Day chairman, VFW Post 1761, at 945-9850.
