THORNDIKE – People for People, the Waldo County Christmas charity working on its 14th annual project, is making a last-minute appeal for donations.
Paul Garelli, chairman of People for People’s board, said donations have been coming in more slowly this year.
“Through a combination of factors outside our control, we appear to have lost track of many loyal supporters,” Garelli said. New addresses stemming from the county’s switch to E-911 is one explanation for the return of many appeal letters by the Postal Service, he said.
“Despite all the confusion, though, we’re glad to report that we’re about halfway there, in terms of raising funds for this year’s project,” he said. “Requests for help are pouring in from all over Waldo County, and our shoppers are doing a great job finding fun gifts and warm winter clothing for each child on our list.”
Garelli said an additional $15,000 to $20,000 is needed to finish this year’s program.
“Most of our donations are under $50, with a few in the $1,000-$2,000 range, so we gratefully welcome contributions of any size,” he said.
People for People is a volunteer effort. There are no paid staff members, and office space, equipment, postage and printing costs are all donated. Since 1987, People for People volunteers have bought, wrapped and delivered more than 9,000 sets of children’s gifts and more than 4,000 food baskets to needy Waldo County households.
Contributions can be sent to: People for People, P.O. Box 1, Thorndike 04986-0001.
