Police message: You drink, you drive, you lose

The Bangor Police Department is stepping up its efforts this month to curb drinking and driving, promoting a national campaign designated as “You Drink & Drive – You Lose.”

From placing red ribbons on police cruisers to publicizing the names of people arrested for drunken driving, the Police Department hopes that with increased awareness will come restraint when it comes to driving while under the influence of intoxicants, whether alcohol or drugs.

According to the Police Department, in the holiday season many people go to social gatherings and it’s important for the police to do anything they can to lessen the chances of people driving intoxicated. An arrest for OUI is not only embarrassing, it can be a costly mistake, resulting in thousands of dollars in legal fees, court fines and increased insurance costs.

In conjunction with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, all marked Bangor police cruisers will display red ribbons used in the “Tie One On for Safety” effort during December.

Bangor police officers will also be proactive during the month and will fax to area media the names and information on people who are arrested and charged with OUI.

Also, on Dec. 15, patrol cars in the city will have their headlights on during the day as well as night as part of the “Lights for Life Day.” This day is set aside by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to call attention to the deaths of about 16,000 people, and the 305,000 people who are injured on the nation’s highways each year because of impaired drivers.

As of Nov. 24, the Bangor Police Department has arrested 248 people for OUI this year.
