Columbia House gains Historic Register entry

COLUMBIA FALLS – The Columbia House has been entered into the National Register of Historic Places.

Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, said the designation indicates that the property has been documented, evaluated and considered worthy of protection as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

The home is thought to have been built in 1834. It is a two-story Federal-style frame house with a rear ell connected to a two-story wing and carriage shed.

It was long used as a hotel, and the property was eligible for the designation because of its association with the commercial history of Columbia Falls.
