CALAIS – The 16th annual “Lets All Have a Merrier Christmas” program has begun, and area residents are encouraged to stop into the local Wal-Mart to pick a child’s name from the annual Christmas Wish Tree.

The program operates throughout Washington County and is designed to provide a new toy and a warm outfit to children who will receive very little else this year, according to Chairman Rhonda French.

French, an instructor at Washington County Technical College, began the program with others in 1984.

The Calais Wal-Mart has participated by encouraging customers to pick a name off the tree and shop for a needy child, French said.

Last year, businesses, churches and individuals provided more than $4,000 worth of toys and clothing to more than 250 children, French said.

This year, “Let’s All Have A Merrier Christmas” is expecting an even greater need.

Anyone wishing to help is encouraged to go to the Calais Wal-Mart and pick a name from the tree or contact French at 497-5490. Her address is P.O Box 35, Jonesport 04649. French may be reached at rhfrench@yahoo.com.
