Burns, Young pace Bengals

FORT KENT – Tyrone Burns scored 16 points Saturday and the University of Maine-Fort Kent reeled off a 21-4 string to start the game in cruising to a 100-62 Maine Athletic Conference basketball victory over UM-Machias.

Morris Young added 15 points while Shaun Tomblin and Matt Daudier notched 14 each for UMFK.

Shareef Sims scored 17 points and Tony Heal had 15 for UM-Machias.

MMA splits two over weekend

At Castine, Maine Maritime Academy split two weekend games, beating Newbury 63-45 Sunday after dropping a 61-55 decision Saturday to Lasell College.

On Saturday, Monica Sheppard poured in 29 points and tallied five steals for Lasell of Newton, Mass.

Nina Blair pulled down 10 rebounds for the winners.

Stacey Ryan led the Mariner attack with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Jamey Lesiewicz tossed in 12 points.

On Sunday, Rachel Merrill’s 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists paced MMA to victory over Newbury College (Mass.).

Janey Lesiewicz and Kate Lawler each notched 14 points and Monica Locke ripped down 10 rebounds for the Mariners.

Rita Hourani tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Newbury.

At Alfond Arena in Orono, the Black Bears scored three goals in the third period Saturday to blow the game open.

Karen Droog scored two goals for the 7-7 Bears. Tracy Caridade and Cailee Heggestad added a goal and an assist apiece. Kelly Nelson notched three assists while Andrea Keller had one assist. Dawn Froats made eight saves on eight shots.

Anna Vandermarliere made 42 saves on 46 shots for the 3-13 Warriors.
