I am writing to join the chorus of those protesting Maine Public Radio’s cancellation of the Metropolitan Opera. What really ticks me off is that this cancellation is unnecessary. The weekend gives MPR viewers five hours of duplicate programming (“A Prairie Home Companion,” “Car Talk,” and “Weekend Fresh Air”). I know these programs are popular, but there is a remarkable invention called the tape recorder, which anyone who chooses to listen to these programs at another time can utilize.
If these duplicate programs were removed there would be sufficient time for broadcasting new programs without disturbing the Metropolitan Opera.
I will add, too, that I am not amused at Robert Gardiner’s characterization of those of us who enjoy the opera as an insignificant minority whose financial contribution to MPR is minimal. I will remind him during the next pledge week that our financial contributions are more significant than Gardiner thinks, and I believe others will do the same.
