MACHIAS – A Washington County Superior Court jury Tuesday found a 34-year-old Baileyville man not guilty of assaulting a woman he knew.
In August 1999, William “Willie” Berube had been charged with unlawful sexual contact, assault and criminal threatening.
Berube’s attorney, David Mitchell of Calais, in his opening statement Monday confirmed there had been an incident involving Berube and the victim, but said that his client was the one who was attacked.
Although Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh attempted to paint a different picture of what happened that night, the jury found in favor of Berube.
