Hooray for the vindication of Tim Caverly, former manager of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (BDN, Dec. 8). It’s remarkable that someone with his dedication to protecting the Allagash, the very basis of his position within the Department of Conservation, was terminated for doing his job. I’m encouraged that Conservation Commissioner Ronald Lovaglio has come to understand that there are those in his employ who care deeply about Maine’s natural resources, in this case the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
The wilderness character that Sen. Edmund S. Muskie worked so hard to protect in perpetuity by including the Allagash in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act has been in jeopardy over the years. As manager of the waterway, Tim took up the challenge of that protection, a daunting task given the ever-escalating road system and consequent ease of access. For doing this, he should be applauded.
